Exploring the Norwegian Fjords on a Private Yacht
For more than 100 years the Norwegian Fjords have been visited by Cruise Ships from all over the World.
In the early beginnings the Fjords were a destination, not only for the rich and wealthy in their private owned yachts, but also for young adventurous people hiking around on small steam ships and fishing boats that tied the small communities up to cities like Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim.
At first, guests and tourists were usually from the British upper class, exploring the Fjords and rivers for salmon fishing. This was a sport for the Lords, and we still have a lot of “Lords Cabins” situated in narrow fjords close to some of the richest salmon rivers in the country.
Now, in modern times “Hurtigruten” has taken over much of the traffic, sailing every day northwards from Bergen and southwards from Kirkenes, visiting 35 ports between the two cities. On this journey the ships are sailing in both narrow passages and open sea, and the scenery is acknowledged all over the world.
The same route can be experienced, even in a better way, by chartering a private yacht. On a yacht from 50 to 70 feet you can reach more narrow places, shallower waters and small communities, some of which have barely changed at all since the first adventurers visited the places more than 100 years ago.
The smaller yacht business has evolved slowly from the early start more than 50 years ago, up to the standard that some of the companies are offering today. Modern comfortable yachts with a cruising speed around 20 to 25 knots, managed by a well-educated crew with a local knowledge that is essential for a safe and enjoyable journey in these wild and breathtaking surroundings.
You will visit small shielded fishing villages with gourmet restaurants and small museums taking you back to the hard, wild life on this demanding coastline. A cruise on a private yacht is a unique experience for lifetime. A journey like this is unique and can never be copied, your wishes and demands are the guidance to the crew, where to sail, what to eat and what so see.
Sailing on a large cruise liner is like sailing through the nature. Sailing on a private yacht with local skilled crew is like sailing in the nature - a big difference.
