East Anglian Sea School

East Anglian Sea School was founded in 1973, starting life as a small family business called East Anglian School of Sailing that has since grown into one of the foremost sea schools in the country having trained over one thousand adults in 2005 alone, with an excellent reputation built on the quality of the training, facilities, craft and catering.

Thirty three years later it is still owned by the second generation of the same family and has been around for as long as the Royal Yachting Association training scheme.

We are based in East Anglia at Suffolk Yacht Harbour on the river Orwell 2 miles from the North Sea at Levington near Ipswich in Suffolk with good road and rail links and the marina is well signposted from the main routes.

The school has 30 mature, patient and experienced instructors, qualified to the highest standards in Sailing, Motor Cruising, Power Boating and Dinghy sailing.

Training is run using a fleet of “strata” yachts, motorcruisers and powerboats and Dinghys from Beneteau, Jeaneau, Moody, Fairline, Ribeye, Wayfarer, Lazer and RS, all maintained to MCA standards.

A wide range of courses are on offer, to cater for people new to boating right through to experts, in all areas from start yachting or Helmsman’s courses, Competent crew, Day Skipper through to Coastal Skipper and on to Yachtmaster and Yachtmaster Ocean and are run all year round, on weekends as well as during the week.

One of the Sea Schools specialities is own boat tuition, where we put an experienced instructor on to a customers own boat (yachts, motorboats, sports boats or ribs) and will teach whatever the customer wishes.

For course details and prices, follow the light blue links on the sides of this page.

Understanding the electronics, radar, GPS, chartplotter or diesel engine. Close quarter boat handling, manoeuvring in confined spaces and marina mooring are all popular with people on their own boats. We can also teach any of the RYA practical courses on a customers own boat for up to four people which often works out cheaper and is more convenient for people.

Yachts are also available for bareboat or skippered charter, for corporate hospitality or Team Building. Taster sailing sessions and long distance passages can also be arranged.

The East Coast is ideally situated to provide top quality yachting and motorboating opportunities. With its miles of rivers and proximity to the continent, uncrowded waters and opportunities for pilotage and navigational practice it really is the yachtsman or motorboaters ideal location.

There are plenty of marinas to provide an overnight stay or an opportunity to practise close quarter manoeuvring and boat handling in confined spaces. Ipswich and Shotley Marinas both have locks which beginners (both sailors and motorboaters) tend to fear and avoid, until they have been taken through them and realise that there isn’t too much to worry about.

Which ever way the wind blows there is always somewhere to go. The rivers Orwell, Stour, Deben, Blackwater, Colne and Crouch are all within easy reach and provide interesting scenery and good boating. While the Walton Backwaters is a well known bird sanctuary and beauty spot, it is also a good place to practice sailing skills.

So whatever level of experience you have and whether you are looking for commercial qualifications or purely wish to learn for pleasure, the East Coast of England has it all.
